ISO 45001 new standard for occupational health and safety
ISO 45001 is the new standard for occupational health and safety management that is due to replace OHSAS 18001 later this year. ISO 45001 is currently under review and publication is expected around October 2016, though this timing is flexible and dependant on review meetings.
OHSAS 18001 currently provides organisations with a framework for an effective health and safety management system. There are many benefits to be gained by implementing an OHAS 18001 health and safety management system:
- Reduces the risk of accidents and deaths in the workplace
- Minimises productivity disruption
- Enhances reputation for safety amongst employees, contractors and customers
- Meets legal regulatory requirements
- Can decrease insurance premiums by reducing risks
- Provides a system for continual improvement
OHSAS 18001 certification is suitable for all types of organisations and is internationally recognised as an effective method of improving health and safety in the workplace.
ISO 45001 certification
The new ISO 45001 standard will be using Annex SL which has been incorporated into other new standards recently revised such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
Annex SL will form the basis for all new management system standards in the future. It provides a top level structure with common terminology to help minimise duplication and misunderstandings. This will save time, resources and cost when an organisation needs to integrate more than one management system into their structure.
What has changed?
ISO 45001 aims to eliminate some of the confusion caused by a plethora of other national health and safety management schemes by creating a standard that is internationally accepted.
Similar to the new ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards, ISO 45001, with the inclusion of Annex SL, emphasises the importance of leadership by top management and improved risk management.
In the revision, health and safety becomes an integral part of the organisation and is implemented at all levels with greater employee participation.
