General product safety in Great Britain
In the development of quality management systems we occasionally come across a notion on the part of clients that regulatory requirements don’t apply to their products or QMS content.
Client responses are often deafening when we deliver the verdict that their products are subject to and covered by the general product safety regulations.
The basis for product safety ensuring product safety for consumer goods is the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, this provide the basis for ensuring the safety setting requirements and provisions to ensure compliance. These requirements are non negotiable when creating a meaningful QMS.
“In the UK a person committing an offence under the Regulations as amended may be liable to a penalty. Penalties can include a fine of up to £20,000 or a prison sentence of up to 12 months or both for the most serious offences. The court may also forfeit any or all unsafe goods”.
